Dear all,
the SPNHC legs & regs committee will look into this; we agree in our committee that we should be very considerate, carefully evaluate the situation and submit views that are suited to improve existing processes in the meaning of the existing regulation for all stakeholders involved in this process.
With all best wishes
Dirk (as co-chair on behalf of the legs & regs committee)

I agree with Cody. None of us like to do eDecs but we recognize that the process is intended to prevent wildlife trafficking. It is important as a scientific community that we continue to support such regulations.

Hi, all! I think we need to be careful here. Although I would love to make the 3-177 process more efficient, I think that is different from promoting deregulation of wildlife imports. The 3-177 gives US Fish and Wildlife Service "teeth" when going after bad actors, and the unintended consequences of deregulation could be catastrophic to imperiled taxa, especially if there is perceived support from the scientific community.
Take care,
Cody

Not sure if it matters whether we get the legal stuff right. The deregulators will have to try to get it right. With this government, I am not sure that anybody can predict what is “right”. We just should make sure that we avoid bad unintended consequences, but I think with the above wording, most of those would be avoided.

Mike Ivie talked about National Park Specimens and I outlined a game plan last year. I suspect no one followed up on it. I would but I’m engaged in several other projects no one is interested in and didn’t have time. (I did email some people but never heard back).
If we actually knew what we were talking about, it would help. Again, I would suggest that we all agree, we are scientists, not lawyers. We need to consult a professional and not pretend we know what we are talking about.
Concerning USFWS 3-177, we need to proceed cautiously. Our view is dead invertebrates. What about tigers?
If we suggested anything, it would probably be best to state NON-CITES INVERTEBRATES often.
See how I'm pretending that I know something?
We need to consult a professional!
Cheers,
Mike

Yes, if we can get anything useful out of this government, then some deregulatory measures would be the most likely. It would be great if many of us could submit a 3-177 deregulation idea – if you agree that it should be deregulated or improved for scientific, non-commercial specimens.

Perhaps now is the time to remove or at least improve the USFWS 3-177 process.
