IDigBio is exceedingly pleased to announce that Victoria Tran will join us next week to deliver her excellent presentation on the general principles and best practices of photography for specimen imaging. Imaging is among the most technical aspects of digitization and impacts virtually all collection types. Victoria's webinar will provide significant detail about cameras and the imaging process. You are likely to come away from her presentation with a much better understanding of your camera's controls and settings that will help you ensure the capture of high quality images for your specimens.
March 17, 2026: Imaging 101: General Principles of Photography & Best Practices (2:00-4:00pm ET)

Abstract: This webinar will begin with an overview of how to best take photographs for photogrammetry. We will be discussing the fundamentals of photography, focusing on how to capture high-quality images that can be used for 3D reconstruction. It will cover camera considerations, going over factors such as sensor size, resolution, and starting lenses. We will also explain key concepts such as the exposure triangle, depth of field, and motion control to help create sharp, consistent images.
We will then explore the process and best practices of photogrammetry in greater depth, covering the method of structure from motion, image overlap requirements, scaling, and color calibration. We will be assessing the factors that make certain imaging subjects more challenging to image and discuss strategies for addressing them. Finally, we will compare different imaging setups, some being more accessible than others, and conclude with an overview of the automated imaging system currently being used at the Yale Peabody Museum, known as COPIS.
