Thanks to Sherman and Stephen for the added info.
Responses to questions:
1. I think all of the records we supplied have machine-generated FAST headings. We've done some various "what if" hand work over the course of the project to look various options as they've arisen, but we've worked on rules for machine conversion all along -- this is really the best way to play out "what if" scenarios. The routines are reasonably robust and accommodate for a variety of known legacy and common errors. That said, we know there will be tweaks needed as uncover new cases.
2. Geographics -- we do have some logical patterns, but I'm going to let Ed weigh in on this. Generally FAST will adopt the same form that would appear in a 781 in a geo heading authority record. The Norway example is a processing error -- in fact the authority record shows: >781 0 $z Norway $z Svalbard. We'll look into it.
3. "History and criticism" Sound points. We've discussed various options. I'm going to defer to Ed to respond fully.
Wishing everyone in the U.S. a fine Memorial Day weekend!

"the record where "Fiction" (not History) appears as both 650 and 655 is #2043."
Stephen,
The LC catalog version of record 2043 (lccn 51032556 which is an OCLC REPLACEMENT record) has both $x Fiction and $v Fiction in the 6XXs.
600 10 |a Bagration, Petr Ivanovich, |c kniaz´, |d 1765-1812 |x Fiction.
651 _0 |a Russia |x History |y Alexander I, 1801-1825 |v Fiction.
650 _0 |a Napoleonic Wars, 1800-1815 |x Campaigns |z Russia |v Fiction.
I didn't check this until after I'd responded otherwise to your message about History, Fiction and similar having varying coding, and this further makes me curious about the machine- or human-creation and/or - manipulation of the FAST headings.
Sherman
