[SAC-FAST] [Fwd: Interest group charge draft]

Is anyone else uncomfortable with having an interest group focused on a
single list? An ad hoc SAC subcommittee is one thing, but this feels
different. I'd be happier with something a little broader, e.g.

To explore the theory and applications related to subject terminology intended for faceted application, including FAST (Faceted Application of Subject Terminology), AAT (Art and Architecture Thesaurus), LCGFT (Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms), and others. To provide a forum for users and others interested in the faceted approach to subject access to compare notes and discuss further developments and implementations of subject faceting for digital projects and related topics.

Stephen

Dear FAST Folks,
I thought the topic or charge for the new interest group should be a little bit more. How do you like this?

To explore the theory and applications related to the Faceted Application of Subject Terminology (FAST) subject heading schema and its database. To provide a forum for users and others interested in FAST to compare notes and discuss further developments and implementations of FAST for digital projects and related topics.

Thanks for your help,
Jimmie

Subject: Re: [SAC-FAST] Interest group formation

Dear FAST Subcommittee,
Some of you may remember (better than I did) that we had favorably discussed re-forming as an Interest Group within CCS several meetings ago and were continuing as a subcommittee of SAC on an interim basis. It seems like the time has come to complete this transition. Since the application will need to be approved by CCS Executive Committee, we will need to request again that SAC continue us as a subcommittee temporarily.

I am beginning to work on the necessary petition for the transition and will be asking for a little help from all of you. Please read over the drafted text below for the central topic and name of the new Interest Group.

Also, please respond if you are willing to sign the petition. Hopefully everyone who agreed to be on the subcommittee this year will be willing to be listed for the interest group. If your name is not on the list below and you are willing to be on the petition, please let me know so I can add your name.

I hope to complete the petition quickly. Qiang told me we will need to pass it along to Shelby Harken to obtain approval from CCS Exec. I don't know whether they need to consider approving it at a meeting or might accomplish it by email.

Here are some notes from the ALCTS website on forming an Interest Group with draft text inserted for our petition.

The following tasks should be accomplished:

    * Identify a central topic which does not duplicate the focus of an existing ALCTS Interest Group and formulate a founding statement which explains the goals of the group and any requirement for membership.

Topic: Explore and discuss the theory and applications concerning uses of the FAST authority database.

    * Establish a membership list with a minimum of ten (10) ALCTS member's signatures.
Members (from subcommittee roster)

Laura Akerman

Lois M. Chan

Sherman Clarke

Shelby E. Harken

Qiang Jin

Gertrude S. Koh, Ph.D.

John A. Maier

Arlene G. Taylor

Ed O'Neill, oneill at oclc.org

Jimmie Lundgren (Chair)

    * Select a name for the group which reflects the central focus.

Name: FAST Interest Group.

    * Identify a chair for the proposed group.

Chair: Jimmie Lundgren (Please let me know if you are willing to serve as vice chair; a new vice chair/chair elect will be elected when the Interest Group first meets)

Thanks in advance for your help and have a great day,
Jimmie

Subject: [SAC-FAST] Interest group formation

Hello Qiang and FAST Subcommittee,
It was great to see you all in Philadelphia at Midwinter.

When I asked at the Policy and Planning Committee meeting about how we
proceed in establishing an Interest Group I was told that it is very
easy and that the information on forming an interest group is on the
ALCTS website at:
http://www.ala.org/ala/alcts/alctsmanual/interestgroups/procedures.cfm

We basically need a name, a list of 10 or more members, and a chair.
Then we complete a petition and send it to the CCS Executive Committee
for approval. Everyone at the meeting last Friday night seemed
interested in transitioning from subcommittee to interest group and thus
continuing to work together on FAST. If I understand correctly, we
expect to continue as a subcommittee for another year or two then
complete our assignment as a subcommittee and form as an interest group?

Thanks and best regards,
Jimmie
