Dear Friends,

last Friday the WGCP had the first session of the new year. We focused our discussion on Ann Lauterbach's latest collection of poems, Under the Sign. This was a lively, generative conversation that explored the complex structure of the collection, tracing a number of recursive tropes and motifs that are deployed through the whole book and it's exploration of grief and how language can and cannot express the complexities of feeling as well as the intricacies of the ordinary.

I will attach a number of questions that were drawn from our conversation. These have been sent to the poet herself. She will join us on 9/26 for further discussion of her work (in room 116 of the Whitney Humanities Center. The questions below should be seen as prompts for conversation rather than a formalized set of questions that will be necessarily addressed. The poet and I will settle on a formal place to begin, but after that the discussion will be, ideally, organic and dialogic. The questions should offer a good sense of the issues and topics raised in last week's discussion. And feel free to invite visitors--the WGCP is open to everyone, even first time guests.

By the way, here is a link to an interview with Lauterbach (that had been broadcast on Yale radio). It does an excellent job of covering Lauterbach's background, biography, and her sets of concerns in writing. http://museumofnonvisibleart.com/interviews/ann-lauterbach/

Onward,
Richard Deming, Coordinator.
