Subject: Faculty positions at Northwestern
Dear Michelle, Giovanna, and Irving,
Hello after a long time! I hope you are all doing well.

I’m writing to ask for your help in advertising an opening for assistant professor level faculty positions at Northwestern, including in my own department, Neurobiology. This is part of the NIH FIRST program, and Northwestern’s local program is NURTURE: Northwestern University Recruitment to Transform Under-Representation and achieve Equity.
https://nurture.northwestern.edu/open-positions/faculty.html

Through this program, Northwestern will be recruiting 11 new faculty (four were hired last year and the total will be 15) into three "Scientific Neighborhoods (clusters) – cancer, cardiovascular and metabolic health, and brain, mind, and behavior." My department is of course eager to recruit outstanding young faculty into the latter neuroscience-related area. the application deadline is soon, however, October 31, 2023.

Just to add a little bit of context about the Department of Neurobiology:
https://neurobiology.northwestern.edu/

Our science in the Department is highly varied, but we are all united in a fundamental interest in the biology of the organism— we keep natural behaviors in mind, whatever level of analysis we apply in our research, and we are interested in people working on a wide range of experimental organisms. From a technical standpoint, our recent hiring interests have been in approaches using large-scale datasets to tackle physiological, theoretical, and genetic questions— we just hired in the areas of theory and physiology and are especially interested in anyone doing genetic/genomic neurobiology, but we are also wide open to finding someone excellent, who would like this type of environment for their science.

About that environment: The department is housed in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, still somewhat unusual for a neuro department. That means we run laboratories and do science just like in a medical school, but we also teach undergraduates— we have a thriving major of 400 students, which is also one of the (possibly the) most diverse STEM majors at Northwestern. Since we teach 1.5 quarter-long courses per year, we have a guaranteed 9-month salary and we pay our summer salary from the NIH (or other) grants that support our research program. I offer this information because having teaching rolled in with research forms an important part of our departmental culture— we take teaching and communication seriously. Teaching undergraduates is a way to give back, to serve as a role model, to inspire young people, to keep your own thinking broad and extending beyond your own research expertise, and to have a sense of agency that is not always present in all kinds of institutions. Being in a college of arts and sciences also provides opportunities to interact with the range of departments found in colleges: e.g., physics, chemistry, molecular biology, psychology (some of us have even collaborated with earth sciences, anthropology, and English!), in addition to all the engineering departments in the engineering school. We also collaborate with med school colleagues.

Anyway, that is just an informal overview. If you know of any candidates who might be interested in applying, I would appreciate it if you would please let them know about this opportunity. And if they would like to learn more about our department, please feel free to put them in touch with me directly.

In any case, I'll be grateful for any help you an offer in getting the word out to the great candidates that are out there! Thanks.

Sincerely,
Indira
