On behalf of the Wu Tsai Institute, the Department of Neuroscience and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion of the School of Medicine, please join us for a conversation on Best Practices in Mentoring and Partnerships with Minority Serving Institutions with invited speaker Dr. Carmen Maldonado<https://neuroid.uprrp.edu/index.php/dr-carmen-s-maldonado-vlaar/>, Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Puerto Rico.
Dr. Maldonado is a nationally recognized mentor and expert in programs to broaden participation in the sciences. She will discuss her insights mentoring students from underrepresented backgrounds and establishing productive and collaborations that equally benefit research intensive and minority serving institutions.

Biography:
Dr. Carmen Maldonado is Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras and Chair of the Professional Development Committee of the Society for Neuroscience (SfN). She has established numerous training programs aimed at broadening participation in STEM, including the first UPR Center for Undergraduate Research and Learning<http://www.criiasupr.org/>, the NIH-funded Neuro-ID<https://neuroid.uprrp.edu/> training program, and an NSF-ADVANCE. A recognized mentor and DEIA expert, she received the 2021 SfN’s Bernice Grafstein Award for Outstanding Mentoring from SfN and the 2024 NIH Institutional Prize for DEIA in Biomedical and Behavioral Research. Dr. Maldonado studies molecular pathways related to cocaine use disorder and has trained >150 Latine students (70% women), many of whom are Yale PhD postdocs, graduate students, postbacs, or alumni.
