James Longenbach, Gilmore Professor of English at the University of Rochester, and a distinguished poet and critic, will give a lecture and a poetry reading this coming Thursday, April 1, at Yale Univeristy.  Longenbach is the author of four books of poems, including /Fleet River/, /Draft of a Letter/, and /Threshold/, as well as critical books on Pound, Eliot, Yeats, and Stevens, an overview of twentieth-century American poetry called /Modern Poetry After Modernism/, and two books of poetics (/The Resistance to Poetry/ and /The Art of the Poetic Line/).



Longenbach's lecture, entitled "The Art of Writing Badly," is sponsored by the Twentieth-/Twenty-First Century Colloquium in the English Department.  It will be held in LC 319 at 4pm;  his reading, introduced by Louise Gluck, will follow in LC 317 at 7.

Both events are free and open to the public.
