[yul-naco] Fwd: Temporary cessation of loading LC authority distribution files

Dear NACO catalogers (or at least those of you who have not yet left
for the holidays):

OCLC just released the following message (below). Please read it.
Thanks to our recess period, we should not really be affected by
this, but much depends on when exactly they expect to be able to
resume loading the authority file updates sent to them by LC.

If by chance any of you were expecting to do NACO work this afternoon
(or over the break), it would be wise NOT to rely solely on OCLC for
your authority searching. I would use the LC web authorities or RLIN
to view the most up-to-date version of the authority file.

It is still okay to create new records, or update existing records,
in OCLC. Just search LC/RLIN to make sure you aren't creating a
duplicate record or updating an older version of an existing record.
If in doubt, I'd refrain from making any updates for the time being.

OCLC is not yet sure when after Jan 1 they will be able to resume
loading LC authority file updates; I'll let you know when I hear more.

-Manon

>As a result of changes outside of OCLC's control that impact the
>authorities distribution files, we will not load new authorities files
>(names and subjects) until after the first of the year.
>
>This decision will have an impact on all OCLC users (Connexion and
>Z39.50) of the LC Names and Subject Authority Files:
>
>1. The most recent distributed files loaded into OCLC systems from
>the Library of Congress were those dated 12/18. Any records currently
>in the distribution queue will remain in that state. Please note: No
>data will be lost.
>
>2. Users can continue to add newly created authority records using
>Connexion. OCLC will continue to send distribution files to the Library
>of Congress on a daily basis, however, no files will be loaded. Please
>note: No data will be lost.
>
>3. Users can continue to modify existing authority records using
>Connexion. It is important to be aware, however, that because no files
>are being loaded, the version of the record retrieved *may* not be the

>OCLC will continue to send distribution files on a daily basis, however,

>OCLC deeply regrets the inconvenience resulting from this decision and
>will work to resume normal activities in a timely manner. Updates will
>be posted as more information becomes available.
