Dear NACO catalogers,
Larry Heiman recently asked me about an authority
record with a 667 field that simply says
"Substitute." I couldn't find any explanation in
DCMZ1, LCRIs, NACO Participant's Manual, etc., so
I asked our liaison at LC, who asked Kay Guiles, who said:
"I don't think this is documented any more,
certainly not in Z1. One aspect of it was to
indicate that an authority card had been made as
a "substitute" for a previous one that was lost."
I thought others might be interested in this
historical tidbit of information. LC says we can
either leave such fields in the record or delete
them, whichever we prefer. Here is an example:
001 3294855
005 20060404052725.0
