The updates to RDA in the RDA Toolkit took place overnight. A quick run-through of changes I noticed. If there are other changes that need to be highlighted, please post to the list. For a list of all the changes, scroll to the bottom of the navigation column and click on 2014 April update and open the 2014 update summary. A link to the current instruction is in the left column. A link to the superseded instruction is on the right, if there is an instruction to be superseded. Most of the changes involve re-numbering or the consequent addition of references due to the insertion of a new instruction.
1.7.3. New example for transcribing statement of responsibility when the names appear with affiliations.
2.3.1.7. See the PS. When analyzing a volume in a series without a distinct title, create a separate bibliographic record; the example shows how to handle the 245. Of particular importance for LC, since they always class separately multipart monographs. But it would apply even if the set was classed together.
3.22.1.4. New instruction applying to notes on items for early printed resources.
6.14.2.5, 6.14.2.5.1-2. For music cataloging on formulating certain types of preferred titles.
6.15.1.3-6.15.11.4. For music cataloging, revision and re-numbering.
6.15.1.12-13. Music. Deleted. (Accompaniment and voice parts)
6.19.2.3-6.22.1. Law. Revision and re-numbering of rules for treaties.
6.28.* Music. Revision to instructions.
6.29.* Law. Lots of re-numbering, a couple of instructions deleted.
6.30.1.5.1-6.30.5.3. Liturgy and religious works. Revised instructions.
9.19.* new instructions were added for mandatory and other additions to AAPs for persons.
9.19.1.2.6. Other designation associated with the person: term associated with a name in sacred scripture, fictitious character, legendary character, type, species, or breed. Clarifies that JSC wants these to be used in AAPs only to break conflicts <previously RDA said at one point it was required, at another point only to be used to differentiate). But there is an option to add the qualifier even if there is no conflict. No PS on this yet. Some workflow issues since the qualifier fictitious character is mandatory in LCSH. As the names are needed for subjects, they have to be re-established in the NAF. If established without the qualifier, split file will result, e.g. Sherlock Holmes was established without a qualifier, which changed its LCSH location in many catalogs. (The NAF form will use different punctuation and add a subfield, but this does not usually affect display order). Similar impact for sacred scripture persons?
11.4.5. Period when corporate body was active (as opposed to specific beginning and ending dates) is a new element. Update to MARC 046 in authority records is in process.
19.3.2.13. Law. New instructions for participants in a treaty.
Glossary terms augmented with new definitions related to treaties.
PS: scattered throughout are changes related to the handling of alternate chronological designations that would apply to non-Gregorian calendars.
