Happy New Year NACO colleagues,
Thank you to those of you who have contacted me personally to answer my questions about creating a NACO record for a manga.
Here are responses I’ve received so far:
* In my unpracticed eyes, it looks good to me!
* Is it appropriate to add 377$a = jpn?
* My response to this pertinent question: No, it would not be appropriate to add a 377 because this is a work record and not an expression one. Language is currently an expression attribute in original RDA. When we implement the new RDA Toolkit, we may be able to add the language as a representative expression in 387 $h of a work record if PCC decides it is appropriate.
* The transliteration is correct! It is in fact simpler than I had expected since it uses only the phonetic characters and not ideograms.
* Preferred title: Using “Garo” as the preferred title and “Gekkan Manga Garo” as a variant makes sense in my opinion. It matches us with the way the Japanese Wikipedia article treats the title (https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%AC%E3%83%AD_(%E9%9B%91%E8%AA%8C)<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fja.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2F%25E3%2582%25AC%25E3%2583%25AD_(%25E9%259B%2591%25E8%25AA%258C)&data=05%7C02%7Cyul-naco%40mailman.yale.edu%7C72b3b3f995604d44df7408dc0ba67fdc%7Cdd8cbebb21394df8b4114e3e87abeb5c%7C0%7C0%7C638398056937060870%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=ZA1NBHa%2FiViXhWq0%2F1RWG55AmmuNdG2P4iPgDmsNdhI%3D&reserved=0>) (It has “Garo (Magazine)” at the top and the article text begins ‘“Gekkan Manga Garo” was …’). Plus on this page of sale listings I can see that many of the issues from the 1980s and 90s did not include “Gekkan Manga” on the cover (https://jp.mercari.com/search?keyword=%E6%9C%88%E5%88%8A%E6%BC%AB%E7%94%BB%E3%82%AC%E3%83%AD<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fjp.mercari.com%2Fsearch%3Fkeyword%3D%25E6%259C%2588%25E5%2588%258A%25E6%25BC%25AB%25E7%2594%25BB%25E3%2582%25AC%25E3%2583%25AD&data=05%7C02%7Cyul-naco%40mailman.yale.edu%7C72b3b3f995604d44df7408dc0ba67fdc%7Cdd8cbebb21394df8b4114e3e87abeb5c%7C0%7C0%7C638398056937060870%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=C1EUNKEe4AdtPtSN%2BYkZJ9X3yEku12p3P2ft84H6W%2Bc%3D&reserved=0>).
* I know we’re not technically supposed to consider future conflicts, but it turns out that Garo is also the name of a folk rock group (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garo_(band)<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FGaro_(band)&data=05%7C02%7Cyul-naco%40mailman.yale.edu%7C72b3b3f995604d44df7408dc0ba67fdc%7Cdd8cbebb21394df8b4114e3e87abeb5c%7C0%7C0%7C638398056937217109%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=u7QnuhwXtV0r8mM51tTbI8TpwvjqXOKtU0ry4D2ttJg%3D&reserved=0>) and a television franchise (https://www.d-world.asia/garo-en<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.d-world.asia%2Fgaro-en&data=05%7C02%7Cyul-naco%40mailman.yale.edu%7C72b3b3f995604d44df7408dc0ba67fdc%7Cdd8cbebb21394df8b4114e3e87abeb5c%7C0%7C0%7C638398056937217109%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=aU7sItYfUyax2stjJpc2mB99jKCpFu5JpDI%2B4C5YRvQ%3D&reserved=0>) – so yes, I certainly don’t mind a qualifier! I think I might go with “(Magazine)” rather than using the publisher’s name though, since we’re not distinguishing it from other magazines of the same title.
* I would 100% add the qualifier to the authorized form and then update the bib records in OCLC to match.
Please, do not hesitate to let me know if you have any other comments and suggestions.
Thanks again,
Dominique

Subject: [yul-naco] Help with NACO record for an underground manga
Dear NACO colleagues,
I created an authority record for an underground manga magazine that is the subject of a book I cataloged. See online save file #250: Garo (Seirindō).
This is completely out of my comfort zone. Therefore, I would appreciate advice, in particular from those of you who know this type of material and, of course, from those of you who know Japanese.
This is the Wikipedia page about the magazine: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garo_(magazine)<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FGaro_(magazine)&data=05%7C02%7Cyul-naco%40mailman.yale.edu%7C72b3b3f995604d44df7408dc0ba67fdc%7Cdd8cbebb21394df8b4114e3e87abeb5c%7C0%7C0%7C638398056937217109%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=XB6VvEzmE%2BoYJpGL0K%2FBi1cvwIzFe2nSxtaoP%2FoIMf4%3D&reserved=0>. This website shows cover images of 80 volumes, including the first issue: https://comicvine.gamespot.com/monthly-manga-garo/4050-97467/object-appearances/4040-64715/<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcomicvine.gamespot.com%2Fmonthly-manga-garo%2F4050-97467%2Fobject-appearances%2F4040-64715%2F&data=05%7C02%7Cyul-naco%40mailman.yale.edu%7C72b3b3f995604d44df7408dc0ba67fdc%7Cdd8cbebb21394df8b4114e3e87abeb5c%7C0%7C0%7C638398056937217109%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=kiHPj1fP8v4APkULWadW9DROPFpp2IyPwlANnrbJ%2FOw%3D&reserved=0>
Here are my questions:
* Is the transliteration correct?
* Is the preferred title correct: Garo (and not Gekkan manga Garo)?
* Following RDA 6.27.1.9 and the accompanying LC-PCC PS, I added a qualifier to the title even though it does not conflict with another title in NAF because it conflicts with other titles in our catalog and in OCLC. I note, however, that there are PCC records for other books about this manga where the choice of title in 630 00 is simply Garo (see for instance 1237994361). Do you agree that adding a qualifier is the right thing to do?
* Are there changes I should make to my record?
Thanks, and happy holidays,
Dominique
