Dear Colleagues,

I am forwarding this NACO discussion about NUC from the PCC Listserv in case you are not on the PCC Listserv.

Best,
Wheat

I don’t agree about the NUC being equivalent to LC. The NUC was created from data supplied by many other libraries in addition to LC, and the data is often inconsistent. If you look at the entries for “Avack, Giuseppe d’”, you will see they are not all the same. At any rate, most of the entries in NUC are pre-AACR2, and can be quite different from headings constructed according to newer standards.

Just a follow-up: a keyword “nt:” search of “nuc pre” in the Name Authority File pulls up numerous 670 NUC pre-56 examples. None cite volume or page numbers, just the heading, and, very often, the usage (if different from the heading) but feel free to counter with examples that do. This was a very quick search. I was taught back in the day (by a very insistent boss :-) likely based on his NACO training ca. 1988) that an NUC heading was LC equivalent.

I agree it’s not necessary to cite LC or NUC, but since the established form of the name begins with a prefix, I think it’s helpful to have a 400 with the name entered under the part following the prefix.

I don’t think there is any requirement to search the LC catalog, and certainly not the NUC https://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/naco/670faq.html#11

Nor is a reference from that old form required. However, it should be reported for bibliographic file maintenance: https://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/naco/bfmguide.html

I agree the 400 should be added, but I don’t think I would add $w since the name was not previously established in the authority file. If you’re going to cite bibliographic name headings in NUC, you should include volume and page number. You can also cite the heading in the LC bibliographic record, and there are instructions in DCM Z1 for doing this.

The original National Union Catalog can be a useful source for old headings. Full text is available at

https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/000140237<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/000140237__;!!EDx7F7x-0XSOB8YS_BQ!e7UucCNfH4FxFcES4wGofD1_QaYITJh4gBZ1GQPoL94-wnKpzClaTtOXflbpghST8v01YaEh6ee3L1jpf5zmRQ$>

Pick the likely volume and choose “Search in this text.”

“Avack” pulled up

Avack, Giuseppe d’, abp. 1899-

>From that information I could create 670 citation and then a 400 for the old heading:

670 NUC pre-56 $b (heading: Avack, Giuseppe d’, abp. 1899-)

4001 $w nnaa $a Avack, Giuseppe d’, $c abp. $d 1899-

If a name is listed in authorities.loc.gov but there is no red button in the left column that says “References” or “Authorized Heading,” then the heading comes from the LC catalog<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__catalog.loc.gov_&d=DwMFAw&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=O9-UIVab7e9YxpBphmOmeEQruoCpRWXNPKDBg9tfb88&m=zTgqWadJLMc153JIomDeoGinYD87zprWabZyGIsGuGDqrrtsvnzh3t2r4LDyBdIp&s=rKSnTtp5K5qrs9awjB5OKhm58XIvH0E1-mvX4Gkf9yQ&e=> and is not in the NAF. His name would be established as: D’Avack, Giuseppe, 1899-1979. Religious titles such as Bishop are not added if the name includes a surname (RDA 9.19.1.2.3).

Subject: [PCCLIST] Question about old NARs

Greetings PCCLISTers!

Long-time listener, first-time caller.

I am cataloging a book whose author is in the Name Authority File, but it's one of those old ones that has no further information and no ability for me to control it in my bib record. It's not even one that says "from old catalog"; it's just listed in the authorities.loc.gov<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__authorities.loc.gov&d=DwMFaQ&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=O9-UIVab7e9YxpBphmOmeEQruoCpRWXNPKDBg9tfb88&m=JxCscmrFBjFQ1ZwLdnCwf2_89-LwrEEcRnWVZLsAVtIZB14i2CkdsTdcGfB5waIV&s=DFooxFe68WZszs3Bw8frCC-ad2pvhp_t6KcVZ-5ndbU&e=> results.

I would like to update the NAR. If I do, is there any way for me to link to whatever that old NAR is? Do I need to worry about that?

I was prepared to create a new NAR for: d'Avack, Giuseppe, Archbishop, 1899-1979,

but then I found him listed as: Avack, Giuseppe d', Abp., 1899-

I figured that I would need to incorporate at least one 400 to account for the d'Avack/Avack search possibilities, but is there anything else I need to consider to account for that old NAR listing?

Thanks!
