[Yale ArchivesSpace] extent/physical description question

Mary,

I wonder if DCRM:MSS would have some good advice on extent for manuscript items that you could use in the Extent field? It's almost finished and the core descriptive element rules have been pretty stable for a while. My knee jerk reaction is that it would be better not to use a note for data for which there's a more specific field.

Colleagues,

I have an AS usage question. I am updating a legacy finding aid that has the extent (in pages) appended to the titles of archival objects (usually letters). I want to move the extent out of the title. Since “pages” is not one of the preferred extent type values for the extent sub record, would the best way to enter this in AS be to create an extent sub record or create a physical description note? If the former, should the extent type be “See container summary” with the number of pages in the Container summary field?

I am leaning toward a note, since pages is not the type of data I see us needing to do anything with, but want to see what others think.

Thanks for your input. -- Mary
