Hi Mary,
That’s right. Anything not in the preferred extent list should be given a controlled extent value of “see container summary” and then feel free to express pages (if you so desire) in accordance with DACS or DCRM-MSS.
You’re dead-on that the extent list is for reporting — we decided that this should only encompass space occupied and A/V carriers.

I have an AS usage question. I am updating a legacy finding aid that has the extent (in pages) appended to the titles of archival objects (usually letters). I want to move the extent out of the title. Since “pages” is not one of the preferred extent type values for the extent sub record, would the best way to enter this in AS be to create an extent sub record or create a physical description note? If the former, should the extent type be “See container summary” with the number of pages in the Container summary field?
I am leaning toward a note, since pages is not the type of data I see us needing to do anything with, but want to see what others think.
