FYI from the Desktop list. I'd like to suggest that when you want to add
new bookmarks, you take advantage of the personal feature, since the list
of institution bookmarks could eventually become too long to be useful.

Colleagues:
Good morning. I would like to tell you what we rolled out yesterday
and let you know about a further enhancement that should be available very
shortly.
Enhancements to Cataloger's Desktop notes and bookmarks
A number of modifications have been made to Desktop's note and
bookmarking functions. Up until yesterday all bookmarks and notes that
were created at your institution were available to everyone who used the
same login. With the enhancements that we installed yesterday, it is now
possible for you to create notes and bookmarks that are yours alone. Notes
and bookmarks can be tied to your email address, and you will be asked what
your email address is the first time you try to either create or access
personal notes or bookmarks. You will also be given an opportunity to
choose whether you prefer to see just your personal notes and bookmarks, or
both your personal and institution's bookmarks and notes. The dialog boxes
should make it clear how this works.
A further enhancement to bookmarks and notes is that it is now possible
for you to re-name them, as well as to edit notes after they have been
created. Please note that institutional notes and bookmarks are
potentially editable by anyone on your institution's account.
Enhancement to PDF searching
This enhancement was the one that caused problems yesterday. Briefly,
what we are doing is to make Library of Congress PDF web resources truly
internal to Cataloger's Desktop. Search results will appear in the
document pane like any infobase-derived resource. Further (and this is the
trickier part), hits will be highlighted, which should make searching web
FDPs much more useful. Unfortunately yesterday when we were installing
this enhancement we ran into problems that had not been present on the
testing server. We will continue to work on this feature and hope to make
it available shortly.
Quick Tips update
Joan Weeks of LC's Instructional Design and Training Division continues
to work on updating and enhancing the Cataloger's Desktop Quick Tips. She
reports that she has two more QTs to update from the last round of
enhancements. The current round will require that two more be
updated. These should be available in the next few weeks. As always,
please send your Quick Tips suggestions to Joan at <jwee at loc.gov> with a
copy to me at <bjoh at loc.gov>.
Thank you very much for your continued support. The enhancements we
are implementing came from subscribers. Please continue to make
suggestions for improvements as they come up.
