Dear cataloging and other interested colleagues,

This message was just released from the Library of Congress and articulates
LC's policy for the use non-roman scripts. It also outlines a number of
questions going forward with the LC thinking or approach to those questions.

I suggest that we convene a group of interested parties to discuss the
issues and reply to LC with a summary of our concerns and needs. If you
are interested in participating in these discussions, please let me know
within the next week and I will get the group together.

The Library of Congress Cataloging Policy and Support Office continues to
plan for the use of Unicode characters in catalog records and has posted a
new document at: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/unicode.html

This policy position document outlines the current use of non-Latin
characters in bibliographic records, the technical capabilities available
now that LC has migrated to the Unicode release of our Integrated Library
System (Voyager), and the opportunities in the future for the expanded use
of Unicode in bibliographic and authority records. This document will be
revised as the situation warrants.

Questions and comments may be sent to cpso at loc.gov
