Subject: Re: Is Cataloger's Desktop down?

Colleagues:

My apologies for not responding to the list sooner. As luck would have
it Desktop went down yesterday afternoon while I was riding home with my
carpool. I really appreciate my colleague, Byron Copley, for updating the
list with available information.

    Here's what happened:

1. Our contractor was in the process of installing an enhancement that had
been appropriately tested on the development server.

2. In the processing of installing the enhancement, something unexpectedly
went wrong, and instead of reverting the production site to its previous
state the programmer tried to fix the problem on the fly. Obviously the
problem was more complex than he anticipated, which lead to a 23 minute
service interruption. Normal service was restored at 4:36 PM Eastern time
(8:36 PM GMT).

3. Our contractor has reviewed server maintenance and problem resolution
procedures with his staff to ensure that there should be no recurrence of
this problem. They fully appreciate that this sort of thing should never
happen.

4. The enhancement that was being rolled out yesterday afternoon and which
will probably be rolled out this afternoon is that the Cataloging Service
Bulletin (CSB) is being added to Cataloger's Desktop. You should be able
to search, view, and print CSB within Cataloger's Desktop within the next
few hours.

Our apologies for any inconvenience this has caused. We appreciate
your alerting us to the problem.

Best wishes,

Bruce
