Subject: Metadata Tools Forum Outputs Now Available

Dear Colleagues,
The May 8, 2008 RLG Programs Metadata Tools Forum<http://www.oclc.org/programs/events/2008-05-08.htm>, hosted by the Boston Public Library, brought together nine tool developers and their intended user communities together. These tools were developed to expedite metadata creation or editing. They were selected for the forum because they could be used by multiple institutions and relied on commonly available software most institutions would already have in-house or based on open source components. Most of the forum focused on the tool developers showcasing their work which people could attend as their interests led them. One metric of the forum's success: Almost all attendees saw at least one tool that could be used in their own environments.
The forum Web page now includes summary sheets describing each of the nine tools demonstrated with contact information for those who want to know more:

 * Archivists' Toolkit<http://www.oclc.org/programs/events/2008-05-08b.pdf>, an open source archival data management system

 * Archon<http://www.oclc.org/programs/events/2008-05-08a.pdf>, a Web-based tool for archivists and manuscript curators

 * LS Tools<http://www.oclc.org/programs/events/2008-05-08c.pdf>, an application to extract, import, export, modify, and load MARC records in batch using a Web interface

 *   MarcEdit<http://www.oclc.org/programs/events/2008-05-08d.pdf>, a database maintenance application

 * Metadata Analysis Tool<http://www.oclc.org/programs/events/2008-05-08e.pdf>, an application to quickly identify inconsistent metadata within and across collections

 * MODS Editor<http://www.oclc.org/programs/events/2008-05-08f.pdf>, a Web-based application using XForms technology to create and edit MODS XML records

 * Subject Suggester<http://www.oclc.org/programs/events/2008-05-08g.pdf>, a Web-based tool for subject heading and classification selection

 * WebCat Assistant<http://www.oclc.org/programs/events/2008-05-08h.pdf>, an application that creates a MARC record from online PDF documents

 * WebCat Assistant (UCLA version)<http://www.oclc.org/programs/events/2008-05-08i.pdf>, an adaptation that allows changes to program settings
You can also watch a set of four short videos demonstrating the Web Cataloging Assistant.
The Metadata Tools Forum Discussion Summary<http://www.oclc.org/programs/events/2008-05-08j.pdf> provides a recap of the discussion following the tool demonstrations.
