Subject: [Desktop] Cataloger's Desktop projects underway

Colleagues:

I would like to take a moment to alert you to a bug in Cataloger's Desktop. Several subscribers have reported getting 'access denied' error messages when trying to retrieve some Desktop resources. The problem is in the underlying software behind CD3, and it has been reported to FAST Search. Given the nature of the problem they are treating this as a high priority issue and are investigating the most effective fix. We will update you as soon as there is more to report.

Several development efforts are currently underway:

1. Repair various data conversion problems.
2. Clean up extended roman character set data so that it searches properly. As near as we can call, all text in core roman character languages (e.g., English, French, German, Spanish, Italian) is searching properly. Some text in extended roman character languages (e.g., Czech, Polish) is not currently searching properly. This should be resolved very soon.
3. Update the "Help" links on the rail to make them more useful.
4. Change the start page for MeSH to a more useful page.
5. Enable account administrators to see what personal logons are established with their account, and also to remove users.
6. Re-index all web-based resources to enable hit highlighting.
7. Add a warning that the session is about to time out. Also, when the user re-logs in on the same day, the session history is preserved.
8. Enhance the emailing documents feature.
9. Enlarge logout link.

Several other features are in earlier stages of completion and are a bit further from completion. We'll let you know about them a little closer to their availability date.

As always, we are pleased to hear from you if you have ideas for improving Cataloger's Desktop. Please feel free to contact me directly at bjoh at loc.gov with your product ideas.
