Disaster Response to States Affected
by Tornadoes, Preparation and Response
for States Affected by River Flooding
[http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs024/1101555263485/img/1008.png]
In the aftermath of the recent storms and tornadoes,
LYRASIS Digital & Preservation Services<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=64z577bab&t=dbxofufab.0.thhdcgeab.64z577bab.23352&ts=S0615&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lyrasis.org%2FProducts-and-Services%2FDigital-and-Preservation-Services.aspx> staff have been in contact with state libraries and archives, as well as some individual libraries and archives in MS, AL, GA and NC to offer assistance, advice and determine any support they may need to recover from the recent storms. The leadership from their respective state libraries and archives have proven to be key in the response efforts and as noted in the recent American Libraries article, many of the affected locations have suffered damage to their public libraries with several at least partially destroyed. Strong local community support has emerged and the staff of both affected and unaffected libraries are also playing important roles in helping community members with internet access, copying and filing of FEMA and other federal disaster relief and aid forms. Supported in part by our NEH Preservation Field Service grant, LYRASIS Digital and Preservation Services remain available to any libraries needing free disaster response advice and assistance. Communications in some areas remain difficult so if you know of any affected libraries that would benefit from our services, please call our 24/7 response line: 1.800.999.8558 or email us<mailto:preservation at lyrasis.org>.
LYRASIS Digital & Preservation Services staff are also working with cultural heritage organizations that have been or may be affected by the ongoing Mississippi River flooding. As with the tornado response, state libraries and archives are being contacted to discern the state of public and state libraries, archives and record centers. We will also be contacting academic libraries and other member institutions in the affected areas. If your institution has been affected by the flooding or needs advice and assistance on what can be done before the flood waters reach your area, please call the 24/7, toll-free number listed above. For more information about LYRASIS Digital & Preservation Services, please contact Robin Dale<mailto:robin.dale at lyrasis.org?subject=Digital%20and%20Preservation%20Services>.

LYRASIS Hosts Code4Lib Virtual Lightning Talks
[http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs024/1101555263485/img/1007.jpg]The first Code4Lib virtual lightning talks were held on Friday, April 29th using the LYRASIS Saba Centra space. Code4Lib is a loosely structured group of library technologists that get together on occasion to network and learn from each other. It began as a mailing list in the fall of 2003, when a group of library programmers decided to create an overarching community unbiased towards any particular language or technology.
In February 2006, the first Code4Lib conference was held in Corvallis, Oregon, hosted by Oregon State University. The annual meeting now draws approximately 300 people from around the world. One of the highlights of the annual meeting is the "lightning talk" rounds.A lightning talk is a fast-paced 5 minute talk on a topic of the presenter's choosing. They provide a platform for someone who is just getting started with public speaking or who wants to ask a question or invite people to help with a project. They also offer an opportunity for someone to boast about something he or she did or tell a short cautionary story if time allows.
"Virtual Lightning Talks" replicates this conference activity online in a virtual meeting environment. We had four speakers and 25 attendees. The number of attendees was dramatically higher than the number signed up on the wiki page and pre-invited to the seminar space. Screen and audio captures of the presentations from the Centra recording were uploaded to the Internet Archive under the tag "Code4Lib Virtual Lightning Talks"<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=64z577bab&t=dbxofufab.0.o4ypuufab.64z577bab.23352&ts=S0615&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.archive.org%2Fsearch.php%3Fquery%3Dsubject%253A%2522Code4Lib%2520Virtual%2520Lightning%2520Talks%2522>.
After the session, a thread was posted to a Code4Lib mailing list seeking feedback on the sessions. The response was overwhelmingly positive and we'll be conducting another round of virtual lightning talks next quarter. For more information about the Code4Lib Virtual Lightning Talks, please contact Peter Murray<mailto:peter.murray at lyrasis.org?subject=Code4Lib%20Virtual%20Lightning%20Talks>, Assistant Director of the LYRASIS Technology Services Department.
Participate in a Global Study on
Journal Transfer Issues
A range of problems arise for libraries and their users when journal titles are transferred from one publisher to another, particularly where a learned society or association is involved.
The TRANSFER Code of Practice was devised in 2008 as an attempt to improve the situation for the various players in the journal communication chain and a number of the leading scholarly publishers have signed up for the Code. There is however more work that can be done in this area to improve the current situation, and the TRANSFER Working Group is keen to hear from you in this regard.
In this survey you are asked to provide feedback on the extent of the problem that is caused for your organization and users WHEN A JOURNAL MOVES BETWEEN PUBLISHERS, and the areas in which the problems occur.
Take the Survey Now.<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=64z577bab&t=dbxofufab.0.hrquvufab.64z577bab.23352&ts=S0615&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.surveymonkey.com%2Fs%2FProjectTRANSFER>
The Group will share the results with respondents and will use the feedback to help shape future development of the Code.
