Danuta Nitecki has graciously allowed me to edit a special edition of "This
Old Library," which will keep you informed about progress on another YUL
renovation project, this one in the East Asia Library. This project has
been under discussion for quite some time but only recently have the
budget, design, and timetable for construction been finalized. Here are
the details:
The East Asia Library renovation project will involve structural and
interior design work on all spaces in the East Asia Library on the second
floor of SML, funded primarily by the Council on East Asian
Studies. Architectural design and construction are being handled by the
same firms involved in the CCL renovation and work will progress in
coordination with this larger project. The East Asia Library renovation
will accomplish several things:
1) Improve temperature control in public spaces by updating the heating
system and adding air conditioning
2) Re-purpose several spaces in order to make all collections accessible
to the public, increase shelving for the East Asian reference collection,
and provide enhanced venues for reference and instructional activities
3) Make interior repairs, paint, add new flooring and carpet and generally
refurbish all public and staff spaces (which are really in need!)
4) Improve functionality for readers through the addition of new
furniture, enhanced capacity for computer use, and better lighting
The start date for construction is June, 2006 and occupancy planned for
January, 2007. In the meantime, many units (especially LSF and Access
Services) are working with my staff in the Esat Asia Library as we prepare
our collections for shifting to new homes, both temporary and permanent.
For anyone interested in the design for the East Asia Library space, please
take a look at the floor plans on our web
site: http://www.library.yale.edu/eastasian/renovation.html
Also, for all staff with offices on the second floor of SML who may be
interested in more detail about construction, there will be an
informational session on Monday, December 12, SML 409, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. to
explain the construction process and go over the planning in more
detail. Other staff with an interest in the project may contact me if you
would like to attend.
