[Yulpub] Updating item records in the Microform Reading Room

Colleagues-
Staff in the Microform Reading Room have recently acquired the ability to
update & discharge items in the Voyager circulation module.
Materials flowing into MicRR have, however, been receiving bar codes for
several years, some on a collection basis, and more recently on an item
basis. The backlog of records that need to be updated to show their true
status is considerable. We estimate that there are 10,000 such records
that need to be checked in so that they can reflect the materials' true
status and location.
Most of these records show that the items are "In Process"; others indicate
they are "In Transit".
We are exploring ways to update these records as quickly as possible.
The point of this message, besides craving your patience in interpreting
the Orbis displays, is to ask you to discourage your patrons from placing a
request, as the (erroneous) status message bids them do, to have the
material retrieved for them.
The overwhelming bulk of such items are already in the MicRR. Patrons
should look for them there. Only after failing to find the microforms (or
guides) in the MicRR should the patron consider placing a request to have
the material retrieved from the presumably valid Technical Services status,
usually "In Process".
Thank you for your attention.
