Title: Collection Assistant

Department: Collections

Status: Exempt, Temporary, Full-Time, 1 Year

Supervisor: Associate Collection Manager for Natural Science

 

Position Description: One year grant funded position to address emergency
preservation needs of the Museum of Northern Arizona's fluid preserved
collection of 11,000 zoological specimens.  The year long position will
involve moving collections out of the storage area while facility upgrades
are accomplished, replacing storage equipment, containers and lids,
documenting and labeling specimens, analyzing and correcting preservative
concentrations, designing procedures and schedules to implement long-term
care of the collection, and returning collection to refurbished storage
room.

 

Major Tasks and Responsibilities:

*	Hands-on management of fluid preserved zoological samples.
*	Maintains specimen inventories, location, and activity checklists.
*	Reconciles collection with paper records.
*	Transfers specimens into approved storage containers.
*	Prepares specimen and container labels.
*	Tracks and maintains laboratory supplies.
*	Maintains an organized and safe laboratory including proper
documentation of ATF ethanol use records.
*	Arranges specimens in systematic order.
*	Provides monthly project status reports.
*	Assists with the development of specimen handling procedures,
collection inspection schedules, and an alcohol disposal program. 
*	Manages housekeeping and IPM related activities in the zoology
collection.
*	Assists with preparation of final grant report.

Education and Experience Requirements:

MS degree in Museum Studies, Zoology, or Biology preferred with course work
or experience in natural history collection management.  Experience with
fluid preserved scientific collections preferred.

 

Abilities, Skills, and Knowledge:

Demonstrated ability to communicate, orally and in writing

Good organizational skills and attention to detail

Ability to identify and correct data discrepancies

Familiarity with computer database, spreadsheets, and word processing 

Ability to work independently as well as with student interns and volunteers

 

Working Conditions: 

Generally work indoors under typical laboratory conditions including
exposure to ethanol, 7 hours per day, usually between 9 am and 5 pm.  Odd
hours and long days may occasionally be required.  Must be able to stand for
long periods, stoop and bend, lift up to 50 lbs, and handle fragile items.

Salary: $25,480 per year
