[Nhcoll-l] archival management programs

The system Deb mentions is for digital asset management, but at CAS we have a long-standing solution in place for the Archives overall.

The Academy Library uses Archivists' Toolkit for day-to-day archives management; it allows us to keep track of details of the archives collection (including descriptions, rights status, accession paperwork, physical location, etc.) and search the collection as well. We are planning an upgrade to ArchivesSpace soon.

These are very different issues (digital asset management vs archives management), and one should take care not to muddy the waters between the two whenever possible (systems designed for one can rarely fill in for the other). I'm happy to chat off-list and I will put you in touch with the Academy's Archivist if you like.

All my best,
Becky

After several years and some false starts (including trying some off-the-shelf programs), we are in the process of having a system custom designed, with a number of potential vendors providing demonstrations for us to look at. We have ended up hiring a whole team of people to deal with this issue as we intend to use it for everything from document and specimen images to our digital planetarium shows and all kinds of audio assets (and probably a lot of other things I don’t even know about!). If you want to keep in touch off-list, I would be happy to let you know more, once we have selected a vendor!

Subject: [Nhcoll-l] archival management programs

Hello everyone,

We are looking into options for managing our archives. One of our staff just attended the iDigBio workshop on digitizing source materials, so we have some great information from all who attended that meeting. I was wondering if any other natural history museums who weren't involved are also working on this issue, though. Specifically, is anyone using Archives Space, and if so, do you like it? If not, what other programs are you using for digital asset management or archival management?

Thanks very much,

Elsbeth
