[Nhcoll-l] FW: LARGE museum jars

Hello,

Several years ago, the Michigan State University Museum ordered a series of
large borosilicate glass jars with ground glass stoppers from Dixon. These
hold our fluid-preserved type specimens and we are happy with their
performance. The jars were not inexpensive, and were considered a worthwhile
investment.

We also use the “white buckets” with gamma seal lids for large-sized (non
type) specimens. These were recommended by members of this list-serve a
couple of years ago.

And some of our materials are in stainless steel barrels (30 gallon size).

Best,

Laura

Hi All,

I have to put my penny’s-worth in here to say that we use both Dixon Glass
and Stoelzle for collections glassware at NHM London, and my personal
experience is that both are very good, but Dixon is just as good in quality.
Stoelzle has suffered a bit, as far as I can see, in that the breadth of
their range has gone down, but the range of both borosilicate and soda lime
options available from Dixon continues to be very good.

I do realise that price is obviously a factor for those institutions that do
not purchase ground glassware, but the latter do have the plus point of
being much more durable than other alternatives. So I have no hesitation at
all in recommending Dixon Glass.

Best regards,

Andrew

Hi all,
as emailed few days ago, it might be worth to check if Stoelze US can
provide such jars to the US market; I added links to the company website
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.stoelzle.com_en-2Dstoelzle-5Fusa-2D139.html&d=CwIFAw&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=z6xhgZKN4GDnLx7uInh5nrCaj5VSCsxpDrhOmPjxNHw&s=ARzYY6BQEb8O6lZedtkLRPqgexD0CDQQLdH60HRJwbE&e=
<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.stoelzle.com_en-2Dstoelzle-5Fusa-2D139.html&d=CwMD-g&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=ZzqkbDZu_9HvmTicbTfv-GI4Ob0gp9K_YwR6HVEj90Y&s=4xI8kSREiCM61OD25aEf0k9-FrTboVQh0udBEhvHgWU&e=> .

I do know that ground stopper jars are not that common in US collections;
Stoezle offers better prices & quality compared to Dixon, and if they supply
from the US, shipping costs would no add dramatically.

All the best
Dirk

I'm not sure whether they're still operating, but the British firm of Dixon
Glass were manufacturing large glass cylinders with ground glass stoppers
quite recently. They're not cheap, but are very high quality. I believe they
also produced cheaper cylinders with ground glass flanges that were capped
with a glass plate. It may be worth someone contacting them -

I have tried that. I contacted O’Berk Kols containers and they got in touch
with their suppliers. Unfortunately we are such small fish in the glass jar
world that even if a large number of our museums got together and purchased,
it still wouldn’t be worth them resurrecting the mold. This was some time
ago but if there is enough interest I am happy to try again to see if
anything has changed.

Hello,

This does seem to come up regularly. It is somewhat of a
niche market but seems like it should be big enough for at least one company
to offer an acceptable option that would satisfy most needs. If everyone got
together and had a big enough order would one of the supply companies due a
limited run? It’s not something I use at my current institution but have in
the past.

Good luck. This topic has come up many times over the years and no one has
been able to find a vendor that still fabricates or sells jars larger than
gallons. Two alternatives that folks have been using are stainless steel
tanks or polycarbonate storage pails from University Products -

They do not seal very well but I know some folks who are
using them.

Subject: [Nhcoll-l] LARGE museum jars

Hi folks.

I am looking for large, museum quality, glass storage jars; preferably with
Polyethylene lined caps and (wishful thinking on this part)
 straight sides.

I am interested in jars 128 oz or greater up to 512 oz.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Jay
