To the NHCOLL-L community:

The Division of Invertebrate Zoology, Yale Peabody Museum, is pleased to announce our new publicly accessible Virtual Microscopy website:

http://peabody.yale.edu/invertebrate-zoology/virtual-microscopy

The VM site was developed as part of an NSF-CSBR sponsored project titled "CSBR Natural History Collections: Cataloging and Imaging the Yale Peabody Museum Invertebrate Zoology microscope slide collection" (Award #134911, Leo Buss PI, Eric Lazo-Wasem, Co-PIs). It comprises approximately 4,000 dynamic images created with a microscope based slide scanning system, which are viewable either as "pan and zoom" or variable focus "sliders." A word cloud and thematic searches are also available, and basic caption and image specific metadata are supplied, as well as hyperlinks from the images to the Peabody collections portal (http://collections.peabody.yale.edu/search/) for more details and access to downloadable static images (full data for more than 52,000 slides and static slide images are available at the portal).

Conceptualized by Curator Leo Buss and Senior Collections Manager Eric Lazo-Wasem, the VM website and the pipelines that connect it to the collections portal and YPM's internal collections management systems, were built by YPM Digital Media Specialist Andrew Melien (with assistance from Harry Shyket at Yale ITS) and YPM Head of Computer Systems Lawrence Gall. Museum Asssitant Daniel Drew was responsible for databasing the slide collection and scanned most of the hi-resolution images. The website and content are managed by Eric Lazo-Wasem and Daniel Drew, Division of Invertebrate Zoology. Slide images are still being made and will be continually added until the end of the grant period, 2018.
