Study Abroad Program Highlight: PKU-Yale Joint Program
[cid:image002.gif at 01CA3868.CAA86BF0]
Overview: Yale's own PKU-Yale Joint Undergraduate Program in Beijing offers a unique opportunity for Yalies to spend a semester or year living and studying with Chinese students on the PKU campus in Beijing. You'll take courses taught by Yale faculty, and PKU faculty - all in English, though opportunities exist for advanced Chinese language students to audit regular university courses in Chinese at PKU. We think that this is a great study abroad option for Yale students, but don't just take our word for it - hear it directly from program alumni by checking out the audio clips<http://www.yale.edu/iefp/pku-yale/audio.html> on the program site.
Spring 2010 Courses: You'll earn Yale credit and grades for the courses offered on the PKU program. Just a few of the courses offered this spring -- Chinese language, Chinese Economy, Women in Science, Making Chinese Modern, and Human Genetics. For a complete list of courses, and course descriptions, please see the spring 2010 course page<http://www.yale.edu/iefp/pku-yale/spring10courses.html> on the program web site.
Student Activities & Events: The program offers field trips and excursions around Beijing and China, a Master's Tea Series and The Yung Wing Lecture Series. Students can write for the Beida Bulldog<http://www.yale.edu/iefp/pku-yale/newsletter.html> and join PKU student organizations and societies, and let's not forget the fact that you'll also have all of Beijing at your doorstep, with such incredible sights as The Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, and the Summer Palace (to name just a few)!
For more information, check out the PKU-Yale website<http://www.yale.edu/iefp/pku-yale/index.html>, including past issues of the Beida Bulldog<http://www.yale.edu/iefp/pku-yale/newsletter.html>.
Center for Language Study - Fields Program
The Center for Language Study is now accepting applications for the Fields Program, a unique opportunity for Yale undergraduates majoring in fields other than language and literature to achieve advanced levels of language proficiency within the context of their academic major. Those studying less-commonly taught languages are particularly encouraged to apply, as opportunities to undertake discipline-specific and advanced-level language study are often scarce for such languages.
Fields students spend up to two years following a highly individualized program of advanced-level foreign language study, in which language practice is linked to students' majors or other areas of academic and intellectual interest. With funding and support, the Fields Program includes several components that contribute to the integration of language and discipline studies: classroom and independent study, regular sessions with a native-speaking language partner, mentoring from a professional in the student's major field of interest, fieldwork opportunities such as internships and study abroad, discipline-specific instructional materials, assessment of language proficiency, and coordination of the overall Fields experience.
Please note that the deadline for applications for acceptance into the next cohort of Fields students is October 1st.
