Making Stills from Video Tapes

The best way is to use laser disk. You can generally get a much truer
still, and the images are scanned at a considerably higher resolution. But
barring that, Adobe Premiere works fairly well. It will help if you're
using a VCR that allows you to actually freeze frames. If not you'll be
sort of fluctuating between two frames. Premiere allows you to capture
stills on the fly, but it's very difficult to get the exact frame you want
that way. An editing VCR (as opposed to your standard consumer model) allows
you to toggle to the exact frame you want, freeze it, and then it's quite easy
to capture with Premier. You can do a lot w/ the image once it's in
Premiere. Or you can work with it in a program like Photoshop (which is
usually what I do since I'm a little more familiar with it). Give yourself
plenty of time before your deadline. Good luck,
Joe
