It was reported in today's (Sunday) Daily Yomiuri newspaper that
experimental advertisments are being shown on the Toei Shinjuku subway
line, Tokyo. Ninety 12 inch LCD screens are set in pillars between
Shinjuku Sanchome and Akebonobashi stations showing still images which
appear to passengers as a three second animation as they pass through the
tunnel. The advertising campaign was launched by an unnamed advertising
agency and the Tokyo Met. Govt. as a means to curb losses on public
transport. These trials will last until the end of March.
The newspaper headline read: "Underground Movies"
The article didn't mention what the advertisments were for. It brought to
mind a scene in Wender's 'Tokyo Ga' when he shoots passing subway train
windows, clearly making reference to a film strip. I wish I was in Tokyo
next month. If someone does travel on that line, would you be kind enough
to post more details about it. It seems rather innovative to move the
spectator at 30 frames a second rather than the images.
