I don't know of anything in particular, but Yasujiro Ozu often used trains 
symbolically in his films.  You may want to check in materials about him.

And IIRC, there is a movie/ documentary about Ozu, called Toukyouga, made 
out of the director's admiration for Ozu.  Maybe if someone else knows 
anything about this film, they can offer information.  I remember seeing the 
majority of it one day in a Japanese film class at the UW, and I vividly 
remember one scene in which the narrator spoke for quite some time over a 
night shot out the window of a train.
