Japanese Literature/Culture:  The Department of East Asian Languages
and Cultures of the University of California, Berkeley, invites
applications for a tenure-track (assistant Professor) position in any
period and any humanistic research specialty (including literature
and thought, religion or popular culture).  Candidates should
demonstrate an excellent command of both classical and modern
Japanese, a deep knowledge of the culture, thought, and literature of
the period of specialization, and a strong commitment to teaching
both undergraduate and graduate students.  This appointment will
begin July 1, 2001.  Letters of application outlining teaching and
research interests, together with curriculum vitae, names and
addresses of three referees, or placement dossier, and other relevant
materials should be sent to Japan Search Committee, Department of
East Asian Languages and Cultures, 104 Durant Hall, University of
California, Berkeley, 94720-2230, postmarked by November 15, 2000.
