The Third Kyoto Film Culture Award

The first award in the world to honor scholarly research on Japanese cinema,
which was founded in 1997.

With the aim of encouraging scholarly research on Japanese cinema, the Kyoto
Film Festival has founded the Kyoto Film Culture Award which honors the best
critical essay contributing to the development of Japanese cinema study.

The Kyoto Film Culture Award is the first cash award (one million yen; i.e., approximately 10000 U. S. dollars) in the world for
scholarly work on Japanese cinema. Papers accepted include academic research, essays, biographies and autobiographies, whether
published or
unpublished. Submitted papers are not returned.

The Awardee will be announced on theThird Commendation Ceremony: September 30th, 2001(to be held at the closing ceremony of The
Third Kyoto Film Festival). The whole or parts of the the prize-awarded paper will be onlined on the Kyoto Film Festival Website.

Hasumi Shigehiko (film critic, President of the University of Tokyo), Kato Mikiro (film critic, associate professor of the
University of Kyoto), Matsumoto Toshio (film director, President of the Japan Society of Image Arts and Sciences) and?Yamane Sadao
(film critic)

Contents
The submitted material (monograph, critical essay, biography, autobiography,
etc.) should deal with Japanese cinema. Both published and unpubilished
papers are considered. However,only those published from May 16th, 1999 to June 1st, 2001 are acceptable.We also accept
recommendations.

Requirements
The length of the piece is not limited, however it should be written in
Japanese. Handwritten manuscripts are not accepted. Authors should
submit three copies of manuscript with a brief summary within 2000 letters in Japanese. The name, age,address, e-mail address, and
telephone number must be given. The closing date for application is June 1st, 2001.
