I agree with you that Gere's performance is "wooden."
I disagree with you about your characterization of his character feeling
"guilty about the A-bomb."
What Clark Kane feels "guilty" about is the fact that they wanted Grandma to
come to Hawaii without any regard for the anniversary ceremony...
....[in which the ants climb the rose -- surely one of cinema's better
moments!]...
It is THIS that he apologizes to Grandma for...

(who thinks that Rhapsody is not Kurosawa's greatest masterpiece -- but
neither is it his WORST movie either! -- that prize HAS to go to THE MOST
BEAUTIFUL... ! )
