  I don't know much about the super-8 scene in Japan, but I recently 
finished my undergraduate research paper dealing with Japanese Samurai 
movies.  Lone Wolf and Cub have always been my favorite (the graphic novels 
and the movies) but in the research I found several you might like.  Check 
out Seppuku aka-Harakiri, Samurai Rebellion aka-Rebellion or Joi-Uchi, and 
/or if you like the cheesier Samurai films try Lady Snowblood (I don't know 
the Japanese title).  These are pretty entertaining, at least, I enjoyed 
them quite a bit.
