Although it shows some brilliance, I personally think "Audition" should only
be shown with warning. A relatively sophisticated Brattle Theater audience
walked out in droves. But its paranoid (and I think rather misogynistic)
comment on urban dating is unforgettably painful...
I felt it was a fairly good- if overstated- example of the perils of failing
to move with the times, in that Aoyama is still looking for a traditional
bride, and lacks the ability to adjust to the new dating 'scene'.
It's interesting that you should characterize the film as misogynistic. I've
seen many reviews that assume it's a deeply feministic piece. My own view
falls somewhere in the middle of the two.
