CALL FOR PAPERS
Special issue of Asian Cinema on Asian documentary
With a special issue on Asian animation just finished, Asian Cinema,
the journal of the Asian Cinema Studies Society, is now planning a
special issue on Asian documentary. The growing number of documentary
film festivals in Japan, Taiwan, India, and other Asian countries and
the proliferation of Asian works at these festivals attests to the
significant rise in documentary filmmaking in many Asian regions. The
special issue of Asian Cinema aims to introduce and investigate this
recent surge, as well as the history behind it.
Given the on-going vibrancy of Asian documentary, we are looking for
papers written on a variety of countries from a variety of
perspectives. Submissions by academics, filmmakers, and critics are
encouraged, and a few interviews and translations may also be
published. Subjects can include the following:
- Introductions to the contemporary and/or historical state of
documentary in an Asian nation or region
- Analyses of particular films or filmmakers
- Reports by filmmakers on their work or experiences
- Theorizations of documentary in an Asian context
- Translations into English of important non-English studies on Asian
documentary
- Reports on Asian documentary film festivals
- Government policies on documentary filmmaking
- Education in documentary
- The relation of non-fiction to fiction film in Asian countries
To enable a large number of articles, submissions are limited to 3000
words in length.
Hard and disk copies of submissions should be sent to Asian Cinema, c/o
John Lent, 669 Ferne Blvd., Drexel Hill, PA 19026 USA. All parts of the
manuscript should be in the same file on disk and the disk should be
labeled with the file name. Manuscripts should be in Chicago Style and
accompanied by a short one-paragraph profile of the author. Articles
can be accompanied by up to four photographs, with each appropriately
captioned. Submissions will be screened by the editors and authors
informed of the decisions about publication.
The deadline for submissions for this special issue is May 15, 2004.
Late submissions will not be accepted.
