This year's Golden Horse Film Festival in Taipei (11/25-12/5) includes
a retrospective of Shinoda Noboru. Iwai Shunji, his regular
collaborator, will be in Taipei in mid-November for the release of
APRIL STORY, LOVE LETTER [re-release] and ALL ABOUT LILY CHOU-CHOU on
November 12, followed by a symposium on November 13-14.

That's a very interesting weekend in Taipei with only Asian films
opening at the box office, including QUILL (Japan), GHOST IN THE SHELL
2: INNOCENCE (Japan), CRYING OUT LOVE, IN THE CENTER OF THE WORLD
(Japan), FREE AS LOVE (Taiwan) and GHOST (South Korea). Last year,
American films claimed a market share of approximately 85% against less
than 0.5% for local films.

2004 TAIPEI GOLDEN HORSE FILM FESTIVAL LINEUP ANNOUNCED

The Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival is proud to announce the full
lineup of its 26th edition. This year's festival will screen 113
feature films from 20 countries and 78 short films from 18 countries
between November 25 and December 5, 2004. Ticket sales are expected to
reach 100,000, with all films presented at Warner Village Cinemas
Taipei Hsinyi. A selection of approximately 40 films will also screen
at Warner Village Taichung.

This year's festival is divided into nine sections: Masterpieces,
Panorama, Windows to Asia, Made in Germany, Contemporary Chinese Films,
Short Films & Animation, Filmmakers in Focus, 5th International Digital
Shorts Competition and a program of the Chinese language films
nominated for the 41st Golden Horse Awards. This year's Filmmakers in
Focus pays tribute to Japanese cameraman Noboru Shinoda, Hungarian
director Bela Tarr and Chor Yuen's adaptations of Ku Lung's martial
arts novels.

Noboru Shinoda died on 22 June 2004, aged 52, from liver failure. At
the time of his death, his feature film CRYING OUT LOVE, IN THE CENTER
OF THE WORLD was at the top of the local box office charts; it has
since grossed over US$75m in Japan and opens in Taipei on 12 November.
Shinoda was an innovator who worked in close partnership with some of
Japan's most exciting directors at the height of their careers, notably
Shunji Iwai and Shinji Somai. The festival presents Shinoda's most
recent collaboration with Iwai, HANA & ALICE, a work of extraordinary
visual poetry.

Bela Tarr was born in Hungary in 1955, and began shooting films while
still at school. He made his directorial debut, FAMILY NEST (1977),
aged just 22. It was an important film that helped form the movement
known as "documentary fiction". Tarr is still active as a filmmaker and
is currently in production on his tenth film, THE MAN FROM LONDON. His
regular composer, Mih?ly Vig, will attend this year's Golden Horse Film
Festival.

Patrice Leconte and his composer ?tienne Peruchon will be present to
introduce the festival's opening film, DOGORA. The festival closes with
Olivier Assayas' CLEAN starring Maggie Cheung. International guests
confirmed to date include Yoichi Higashi (The Crying Wind) and Yuji
Nakae (Shirayuri Club Goes to Tokyo) from Japan, Quark Henares (Keka)
from Philippines, Claude Nuridsany and Marie P?rennou (Genesis: The
Very Beginning) from France, August Diehl (Love in Thoughts, Distant
Light) from Germany, Jorgen Leth (The Five Obstructions) from Denmark
and Andrzej Jakimowski (Squint Your Eyes) from Poland. Additional
guests will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

On October 30, 3000 limited edition Rainbow Packages will go on sale at
selected branches of Eslite Bookstore and FNAC for NT$2500. Each
package comprises of 14 vouchers that may be exchanged for single
tickets to any festival screening, subject to availability. Purchasers
receive one-week priority allocation in all ERA Ticketing Systems
before single ticket sales are available to the general public on
November 13. Individual tickets cost NT$220; NT$190 for students.
