The results of the Mainichi Concours, one of the last of the big yearly
film awards, were announced:
Best Japanese Film: Chi to hone
Best Director: Kuroki Kazuo
Best Screenplay: Arai Haruhiko
Best Actor: Beat Takeshi
Best Actress: Shimada Kyoko
Best Supporting Actor: Odagiri Jo
Best Supporting Actress: Tabata Tomoko
Best New Face Award: Ueno Juri, Tsuchiya Anna, Yagira Yuya
Tanaka Kinuyo Award: Awaji Keiko
Awards of Excellence in Japanese Film: Dare mo shiranai
Best Cinematography: Suzuki Kazuhiro
Best Art Direction: Kuwashima Towako
Best Music: Hino Terumasa
Best Sound: Tsurumaki Hiroshi
Best Technical Award: Kumaya Hideo
Best Documentary, Full Length: Watashi no kisetsu
Best Documentary, Short: Raden
Fan Award: Howl no ugoku shiro
Animation Award: Kumo no muko, yakusoku no basho
Ofuji Noburo Award: Mind Game
Special Awards: Futaba Jusaburo, Mihashi Tetsuya

The Mainichi tends to be fairly conservative, but they are one of the
few major awards that also focuses on the technical staff and other
genres like documentary and animation. Ofuji Noburo is one of Japan's
great animators, and the award named after him commemorates some
significant contribution to the art of animation.
