Prints and rights would be two different issues.
Print: I think there's an English subbed print in the UK that pops up
occasionally. It was originally distributed by Electric Pictures Ltd
(+44 20 7267 3060), but I'm not sure if they're still around in any
form.
Rights: Didn't Altamira Pictures (+81 3 5456 8581;
altamira at altamira.jp) have some connection to Itami Productions? I'd
contact them on the off-chance for advice on clearing rights.
Also, there's a documentary about food in cinema that has cropped up
at festivals recently that uses clip(s) from Tampopo. It was just in
Puchon. Perhaps the producer knows who has the rights. I'll check
the contact details when I'm next in front of the catalogue.
Another idea. Yubari last year had a focus on Miyamoto Nobuko and
screened a couple of her films, whose rights would have belonged to
Itami Productions. They could advice; in fact I imagine rights may
very well now belong to Miyamoto, Itami's wife. Again, I'll take a
look at the catalogue when I'm home.
