KineJapanists,

Just a notice in case anyone missed the news earlier this week-- the
pioneering Korean film director Shin Sang Ok died on Tuesday (4/11) in
Seoul.

There was a fascinating obituary in the New York Times on Thursday:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/13/arts/13shin.html

Shin was the director of over 60 films in a wide variety of genres, many of
which explored social issues, including the legacy of Japanese colonialism.
He was kidnapped in 1978 by North Korean agents; after a five-year
imprisonment, he made seven films in the North, before escaping North Korea
in 1986.
