BAFF 8 ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL:

OFFICIAL COMPETITION SECTION The Official Competition of BAFF is the most
visible face of the festival and a sort of declaration of intentions of how
a festival like ours hopes to be: a showcase of the best films produced in
Asian countries, a way of keeping your finger on the pulse of the industry
in certain countries, a way of discovering new talents. It is also a
headache, because to maintain quality in the competitive section one has to
watch many films, consider the numerous proposals and reject -with regret-
magnificant works. The number of films in competition- even though it has
increased since the first year- must be manageable.

Besides, the rules of the game have changed since BAFF began eight years
ago. In this time, we have witnessed a true eclosion of interest in Asian
film-making, which has been translated in a greater number of commercial
premieres of Asian movies and a greater presence of these works at film
festivals around the world, including Spain. This is good news. But news
which forces us to go further, to investigate deeper, to search, all in all,
a constant relay. If in the past directors such as Tsai Ming-liang, Pen-ek
Ratanaruang, Fruit Chan, Andrew Lau or Apichatpong Weerasethakul have
competed at BAFF -names which the true cinema enthusiast knows and follows
with devotion- we have set ourselves the goal of discovering the names that
in a few years we will all know and follow with devotion. We hope.

At the same time, it is obvious that BAFF -in its short life- has turned
some names in festival classics. Actors and directors, whose names are no
longer tongue twisters and whom we have the pleasure of reencountering as
they present their new works at our festival (the case of Riri Riza and
Ryuichi Hiroki). Other films belong to directors not so well known or who
are making their debut in cinema. Maybe Naomi Kawase is not more popular now
than before winning the Gold Durian, but it is a name which will inevitablly
be attached to BAFF and our memories of the films that we have seen at the
festival. We hope that the same happens with this year's selection of eleven
films from China, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan and
Singapore.
