Two publications from Yamagata

Here's the new YIDFF News. Of note are two new publications from the
festival, a collection of 83 interviews from the daily news and a
record of the '89 Asia Symposium. Now that nearly 20 years has
passed, the latter is an interesting historical event. In the
mid-1980s there were rumblings of change in the Asian film world,
signs of growing interconnection. You saw them mostly at the film
festivals, and particularly at Hawaii and Hong Kong. But they still
weren't that obvious. Yamagata was prescient in seeing the role they
could play in a regional context. The Asia Symposium was an attempt
to provide a "ba" for figuring out what colleagues were up to next
door. I think it was obvious video was going to change things, but no
one then could have predicted the explosive impact of DV on the
independent documentary sector Asia-wide. Read the symposium record
and you'll hear people share their experiences, their hopes and
dreams. To give you a sense for how exciting this was, let me share
a story from my Forest of Pressure: one of the participants was
Filipino Nick Deocampo, who had just finished an advanced degree in
critical studies from NYU. He had decided to give up filmmaking and
become a historian, theorist, teacher. But the Asia Symposium
completely energized him, and he signed the manifesto Kidlat Tahimik
wrote and then returned to filmmaking. It's great that YIDFF is
putting this out.
