Cavell on film

Off-topic query: has anyone present tried using Cavell's _The World
Viewed_, or perhaps _Reading Cavell's the World Viewed_ (Rothman and
Keane), in teaching Japanese film to undergraduates? I'm offering a
course this fall on Ozu (with Tanizaki Jun'ichiro). Our primary text
for film will be Bordwell on Ozu, but I will use excerpts from both
of the above titles for leavening. One of my colleagues, a film
specialist, tells me Cavell doesn't 'get' film. I gather, from
Rothman and Keane, that this view is not uncommon among those in the
field at large. I'm skeptical. Any comment?
