Naruse Mikio Retrospective in Vienna AND ELSEWHERE

Two dozen is better (far better) than nothing -- but only is enough to scrape the surface.  I'd say that one really needs at least 40 films.  ;~}

Even the biggest (subbed) retrospectives have left out some marvelous films. For instance, no one has shown the utterly delightful "Haru no mezame" (Spring Awakens -- or metaphorically, Puberty), an almost minimalistic slice of life story about a girl making her way through high school -- featuring a young (but already quite talented) Yoshiko Kuga.

Similarly, I don't believe that anyone has shown his very interesting "Tsuma to shite onna to shite" (As a Wife, As a Woman), with its wonderful cat fight between Chikage Awashima and Hideko Takamine. And there are other omitted films also very much worth seeing....

Naruse will come to London in June and July this year. I should be introducing a film or two during the season. It is not as large as the Canadian retrospective, but last I heard they were planning two dozen films or so.
