Kyoto, Visual Anthropology, Arab Films (E/J)

Hello,

For those of you in Kyoto or the Kansai area:

A group of graduate students of anthropology at Kyoto
University who recently published the book/DVD "Watching,
Filming, Embracing Asia and Africa -- New Horizons for
Visual Anthropology" is showing two Arab films and
inviting their directors for discussions as part of the
[Eizo Nandemo Miru Kai] ("Group for Watch All Kinds of
Visual Material") activities.

Monday 13 March (today): Egyptian film "Land of Fear" will
be shown from 16:00, followed by a discussion with
Director Daoud Abdel Sayyid.
Tuesday 14 March (Tomorrow): Tunisian film "Bab'Aziz" will
be shown from 12:00, followed by a discussion with
Director Nacer Khemir.

The directors are actually in Japan to attend Tokyo's Arab
Film Festival 2007 (March 9 to 18) organised by the Japan
Foundation, and have already participated in symposia and
talks there. I thought it wouldn't be suitable to announce
that festival on KineJapan since it's not about Japanese
cinema (although, I guess, the sudden interest in Arab
cinema/culture in Japan is a phenomenon worth studying).
But in the case of the Kyoto screenings, discussions would
most probably involve a lot of talking about the
experiences of the young Japanese visual anthropologists
working abroad (in Egypt and some other Muslim countries
in this case), which might be interesting to some people
on this list.
