The Asahi and other newspapers report that the film director Taniguchi
Senkichi died on the 29th at the age of 95. Taniguchi is probably best
known for his close association with Kurosawa Akira, the two often
working together when they were assistant directors. Kurosawa
contributed the script on Taniguchi's directorial debut, Ginrei no hate
(which was also Mifune Toshiro's debut film), and co-wrote the script
for Akatsuki no dasso, probably Taniguchi's most critically acclaimed
film, which experienced many problems with Occupation censors, as
detailed in Kyoko Hirano's book. Taniguchi eventually settled into
making action movies at Toho, including the Kokusai himitsu keisatsu
film that Woody Allen used in What's Up Tiger Lily. He was also
involved in documentary, working on the official films of the Tokyo
Olympics and the Osaka Expo. He was also famous for marrying the
beautiful actress Yachigusa Kaoru (the Samurai trilogy, Yukiguni,
etc.), who was 24 years his junior.
