The Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at UBC Okanagan has recently
created a Cultural Studies program that will be the first of its kind in Western
Canada. This program is housed in the department of Critical Studies which
contains Art History, English, French, Spanish, German, and Japanese studies.

The Cultural Studies program currently offers core Cultural Studies courses at
the first and second year and then relies on courses from other disciplines like
Anthropology, English, Sociology, Indigenous Studies, Women?s Studies, Human
Geography, History, etc. that flow within the following three streams:
1. Media Studies draws from studies of communications, film, and television to
examine how different forms of representation alter being whether in print,
film, television, Internet, or emergent digital technologies.
2. Global Cultural Studies examines the impact of colonialism and globalization
on forms of cultural production and representation, transnational cultural
relationships, and the formation of local and global identities.
3. Critical and Cultural Theory provides an interdisciplinary theoretical
framework for the study of cultural production, representation, and practices in
consideration of effects on class, ethnicity, race, nationality, gender,
sexuality, and power.

The program seeks a faculty member with a PhD in Cultural Studies,
Communications, Film, Media, Television Studies or other relevant disciplines
like Art History, English, French, Spanish, German or Japanese. The candidate
would be expected to participate in the development of Cultural Studies at all
levels, participate in the teaching of lower level Cultural Studies courses,
and develop upper division Cultural Studies courses in any of the following areas:
?	emergent technologies,
?	Identity and virtual technologies,
?	television,
?	Internet,
?	video games,
?	film studies: particularly studies of diasporic and exilic film, post and
neo-colonial national film.
Candidates with teaching and research experience in these areas are strongly
encouraged to apply. A strong research record, exceptional communication skills,
and a demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level are
required. Demonstrated excellence in graduate teaching is desired. Experience
and willingness to teach digital production would be an asset.

UBC hires on the basis of merit and is committed to employment equity. All
qualified persons are encouraged to apply. In keeping with its focus on issues
of diversity and equality, this program is strongly committed to diversity and
applications are especially encouraged from visible minority group members,
women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, members of sexual minority
groups, and others who can contribute to the further diversification of ideas.
Applicants are encouraged to indicate how they will contribute to the
diversification of ideas within the department. All qualified candidates are
encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given
priority.

Candidates should submit a letter of application, complete curriculum vitae, and
the names of three referees electronically with attachments to
recruitment.fccs at ubc.ca. Candidates are responsible for ensuring that letters
from the three referees are sent directly to the same address. The committee
will begin considering applications on 1 December.
