The only book I can think of that has a chapter on Okamoto kihachi is 'Outlaw Masters of Japanese Film' by Chris D. The review of that book on the Midnight Eye site is not overwhelming but acknowledges the book as a useful source on directors not otherwise written up. The Midnight Eye site also has a tribute http://www.midnighteye.com/features/kihachi_okamoto.shtml and, indeed, obituaries might be a useful source for further reading.
The BFI had two pages of notes on Sword of Doom, which reproduced ... the Criterion DVD notes.

Does anyone by chance know of any books (or papers, translated interviews, etc) in English that cover his life or his work? It doesn't have to be as in depth as The Warrior's Camera or anything, but I'm interested in knowing more about his motives and I haven't been able to find much beyond the essays that came with Kill! and The Sword of Doom Criterion DVDs.
