Calligraphy

Hi Alex,

it's not actually calligraphy but talismanic writing plays a central role: Onmyôji.

in anime, the first episode of Mushishi quite beautifully adapts the animistic take on spirit-writing/calligraphy in the manga.

though it isn't Japan per se, the scenes in chinese calligraphers alongside athletes in Leni Riefensthal are amazing.

cheers,

Tom

Hi everyone,

the German Film Museum is planning a screening of films in which calligraphy plays a prominent role; this is not focused on film from Japan, but they have asked for some Japanese examples. Anything come to mind?
